Take Back the Night
The purpose of Take Back the Night is to empower people to feel safe in their communities while highlighting the need for institutional change in transforming a rape culture, rather than resorting to reactionary, victim-blaming policies. With its focus on ending sexual assault, Take Back the Night is a feminist event, but it has proven to have broad, cross-gender appeal. The Hyde Park Take Back the Night, started in 2005, is sponsored by NOW but involves a coalition of groups, including Queers and Associates and the Feminist Majority, as well as a number of community organizations. It is an opportunity for all people to come together in a strong show of solidarity for survivors of sexual, domestic, and community violence.
