What is Sexual Violence and Why Do We Talk About It?
Many of us think that rape only happens to other people and that rape is the only manifestation of sexual violence. However, sexual violence not only affects individuals of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and experiences, but also occurs in many different forms. Sexual Violence can include sexual assault, sexual abuse, stalking, dating and domestic violence, and verbal and physical harassment. Many people at the University of Chicago believe that these things do not happen among "well-educated people." Unfortunately, this is not the case. By first acknowledging that sexual violence happens on this campus, we simultaneously provide support for survivors and work to prevent it.
The following website highlights campus, local, and national organizations that provide support, information and guidance for survivors, their friends, and family. The University of Chicago's Resources for Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) serves as the central resource for information on education and prevention. Please email any comments or suggestions on this site to Vickie Sides, Director of RSVP. For more information on RSVP visit the RSVP Website.
