What Will Happen at the Emergency Room?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be transmitted during a sexual assault. You may not know that you have an STI until weeks or months after it has been transmitted. Discuss any concerns about STIs with your doctor. S/he can give you tests and preventive medication at the time of the exam. You have the right to information about any medication given to you. Take note of the name, dosage, purpose, and possible side effects of each drug you are given. Even if you receive preventive treatment, it is important to be tested for STIs two weeks after the assault and again six weeks after the assault. Both testing and subsequent treatment are free and supplied by the Illinois Department of Public Health (which can direct you to the clinic nearest you). You can contact the Illinois Department of Public Health at: 1-800-782-7860 (within in Illinois) or 217-782-7860 (from out-of-state).
