Aquaintance/Date Rape

In Same-Sex Dating Relationships

For Women

Although the common misconception is that only men commit sexual violence, rape and sexual violence can occur between two women. It may involve forced sexual touching, oral sex, or penetration with a finger or some other object. Rape committed against a woman by another woman is no less traumatic or damaging than rape by a man. It is still rape. Sexual assault by a partner is traumatic because of the many levels of trust, attraction, and love that may have existed between the perpetrator and the survivor. Sometimes, rape committed by another woman can have added trauma because women expect to be able to trust other women; violation of that trust can feel even more painful.

As in heterosexual relationships, it is important to know your boundaries and communicate them clearly to your partner. Say "no" when you are uncomfortable doing something. Even if you are unsure where your boundaries are or if you think you might change your mind, it is your right to stop anything that makes you uncomfortable. It is also important to listen and respect your partner's boundaries and not to push her into anything that makes her uncomfortable.
